In this story, a young nobleman with an unusually strong interest in horse-breeding is being prepared to marry the wealthy niece of an American Cardinal. (Noble families which are growing impoverished try to marry off their younger generations to the heirs of wealthy commoners.) When the girl arrives at the nobleman's family mansion the day before the wedding, she is shown around the house and its treasures and is told the story of an ancestor's legendary battle against a beast. That night, she dreams of an erotic encounter with a man/beast which culminates in the death of the beast. On awakening, she finds that she has been in bed with her fiancé, who is now dead. When mysterious bandages on his person are removed, he is seen to have a tail and one hand which has turned animal-like. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

i could not finish the movie. it was too campy for me. i turned it off when it became clear to me that the woman was falling in love with the beast in her dreams simply because he forced her into sexual acts.

yeah, right! i wish it was that easy to capture a woman's love!

the other reviewers have already summed it up
i just wanted to add, there seems to be something wrong with the subtitle encoding - they drop out after the first 10 minutes or so, and then show up again somewhere past the halfway point, but picking up right where they left off so the text lags behind the film at least 1/2 hour
so if you don't like watching dubbed films and you don't understand french, you whould probably pass

Quite a surprise by norskog January 29, 2006 - 12:54 AM PST

This movie is a cross between Beauty and the Beast, mid- to hard-core porn, and a country-house comedy of manners. At first I fast-forwarded through the plot hunting for naughty bits, got caught up in the non-naughty bits, and wound up watching from the opening to the middle again. It has structure problems: the three-act formula is muddled. The directing & cinematography is very good and I'm now hunting up Borowczyk's other films. Guy Tréjan in particular is very good as the master of the house.

I could not turn on the english subtitles.
