Synopsis
Detroit was founded in 1701 by the French explorer and fur trapper Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. Located strategically on the banks of the Detroit River, which connects Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie, and on the border between the United States and Canada, the city was destined to become an important industrial hub of the nation. Detroit served as state capital for the first ten years after Michigan became a state in 1837. In the 1850s, Detroit began building railroad cars, ships and stoves, and major industries were established that exploited Michigan's vast resources of iron ore, copper and water. During World War II Detroit became an important center for the manufacture of war machinery as auto companies converted their factories in short order to production of planes and tanks.
