| Jason Robards' powerful performance overcomes the limitations of the early kinescope (black-and-white TV) recordings from which these disks were made. Eugene O'niell's plays tend to be long -- more like novels for the stage -- and his concerns, arising out of his disappointment with Socialism and his pessimism about the human condition, now seem rather 'twentieth century.' Even if the ambiance of the play, which is largely about hope, disappointment and self-delusion, now seems somewhat dated, the fine actors who contribute to this classic performance held my attention throughout. The producers' attempt to bracket the show -- which might have seemed shocking to an earlier generation -- with commentary from a contemporary theater reviewer, now seems unnecessary, but it is an interesting window on the mindset of the time when the play was staged. Definitely worthwhile. |
