| Disappointing. The book and BBC productions are so much better. Acting is so-so. Still a worthwhile rental if only to compare it to the other mediums. |

I didn't read the book, but I found the movie version of THE HITHCHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY as consistently entertaining as can be--full of funny, quirky pieces of sociology, fantasy, politics, hippiedom, science, and mostly just a fervent, rich imagination. Directed, screen-written, cast and then acted by a group who seems to have an intuitive grasp on this wildly inventive look at our world/galaxy, the movie had me chuckling, giggling and outright laughing more than anything I've seen this year.
The film is also a visual knockout: Someone here possesses the understanding that--in translating this sort of thing fantasy to the screen--"reality" in special effects is not necessarily to be prized over imagination, color, design, and a sense of humor. I suspect that lovers of the novel will insist the book is better (the moviemakers dedicate their work to the late author), and since this is almost always the case, I'll be glad to agree. Still, as a film, "Hitchhiker's Guide" is plenty good enough for me. |
