I was surprised to find Tim Burton's CORPSE BRIDE (co-directed with Mike Johnson) not nearly as humorous as I'd heard or expected. His newest movie (in stop-motion animation, similar to his "Nightmare Before Christmas") moves along rather slowly with so-so musical numbers and a plot that contains nary a revelation that you won't have figured out long in advance.

Still, I hung on and was surprised again--at an ending I found quite moving in the manner that it joins the living with the dead. (It also offers the single funniest visual joke in the film.) Has Burton perhaps seen the philosophical French zombie flick "They Came Back"? Just wondering. Full of sacrifice and redemption, his finale offers a closing image as lovely as it is unexpected.
