Synopsis
"A family walks into a talent agent's office..." So begins "The Aristocrats," a joke kept mostly secret by stand-up comedians for decades. An intentionally "bad" joke, the laughs in The Aristocrats aren't in the punch-line (one of the only elements that's the same every time), but in the set-up, made unique by each comedian who tells it in an attempt to fashion the world's dirtiest joke. The cat was finally let out of the bag by Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza, the seasoned funnymen who gathered together a hundred people to tell a hundred different renditions of the bit. Among those presenting their personal take on The Aristocrats in this film of the same name are Jason Alexander, Robin Williams, Gilbert Gottfried, Jon Stewart, Emo Philips, and Chris Rock. The Aristocrats premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"Paul Provenza doesn't actually get every American comedian to tell (or at least comment on) the filthiest joke in the world in The Aristocrats. It just seems like it," writes Sean Axmaker, introducing his exclusive interview with the director of the hit doc that's landed on year-end top ten lists in the New York Times and all over.

Read our exclusive inteview with Penn Jillette, who talks about how he and director Paul Provenza came up with the idea for The Aristocrats, and about the origins of the Penn & Teller partnership, his past movies, his radio show... and magic around the world. Full article >>

First, it might be best not to think of The Aristocrats as a documentary. It's not about insight into the world of stand-up comics, or how to make a joke funny. It's about the dirtiest joke in the world. Or, rather, how different comedians tell this incredibly simple joke in such ways that show off the personality of the comedian telling it.

The cover says everything you need to know: "obscene, disgusting, vulgar, and vile... might be the funniest movie you'll ever see!"

No, the joke itself isn't really that funny on it's own. But watching Bob Saget tell it was one of the most hilarious things I've seen in awhile.

The movie is put together wonderfully -- it seems the more times you hear "The Aristocrats" being told, the funnier it gets. By the time I watched Gilbert Gottfried at the Roast of Hugh Hefner, every word elicited laughter. The profanity, obscenity, and vulgarity doesn't matter anymore. After all, it's only a joke.

I love an awesome joke as good as the next person and actually used to work at a comedy club. But if I had to sit and watch the two full hours of disgusting filth about bathroom humor that this movie seemed to be about it would have been pure torture. I didn't even have to think about turning it off my man did it for me. Ten minutes into the movie that we thought was going to be a good documentary about comedy was a complete disappointment. Swarming in feces was not where I wanted to take my mind for two important hours of my life. Maybe you have the time, I didn't. I'd say don't waist your time subscription on this.

Scatological but very funny most of the time by HarryHardy March 13, 2006 - 1:35 PM PST

Viewers with delicate sensibilities beware: don't watch right after a meal.

Amazing to see so many comic's variations --- all ranging from mildly funny to hilarious. (Gottfied)
