I had no idea Robert Mitchum could play a character like this: straightforward and very, very kind. He marries the over-young Sara Miles against his better judgment, then patiently refuses to blame her for her predictable fling into the obligatory "I've got to be me" stage as she begins to grow up a bit. Her affair with the broken soldier is completely convincing, as is her return to her husband and adult life, but only because Mitchum is so solid and human. The violent Irish politics are a background.
