As sweet and airy as spun sugar but quite a bit more nourishing, ELIZABETHTOWN is another Cameron Crowe gem. You have to be willing to tag along with this shaggy dog writer/director as he negotiates and byways of Southerners (and a few Northerners) in his quirky family romance. Yes, it may go on a tad long, but I wouldn't know where to cut, since almost all of it is highly enjoyable, especially leads Kirsten Dunst and the much maligned Orlando Bloom.
Bloom is simply lovely--so much better than most critics have admitted--and he actually does prove himself capable of carrying a movie. While the young actor didn't quite make it as a sword-and-sandal action hero in "Kingdom of Heaven," he's more than up to the struggle and confusion of this rise-fast/fall-faster fellow. Time will tell regarding the staying power of "Elizabethtown" and Bloom, but I'm betting on 'em both.
Smaller roles here are handled most adeptly by Sarandon (her performance within the performance is delightful), Baldwin, McGill, Greer, Biel and especially Paul Schneider ("All the Real Girls"). |
