This film views like a straight-forward action flick, ending definitively and with a nice, satisfying climax.
The subplots map familiar subplots in other action films, including american action films: the tortured hero seeking redemption, the betraying villain, the mysterious figure that may or may not be an ally, a damsel in distress, etc. In other words, if you like action fare that doesn't stand out for any special reason, but is competently directed and edited, than you won't be disappointed. The plot is advanced at a steady pace and there are pockets of well directed action.
Tatsuya Nakadai is as always excellent. I don't know if it's the beard or the nature of his character, but he has more of the warm charisma of his takeda shingen role in kagemusha, and less of the cold, detached demeanor of his roles such as in sword of doom. If nothing else, he's a pleasure to watch and makes this a worthy rental. |
