| Amateur filmmaker Don Dohler cranked out a bunch of creature features from his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland back in the Seventies with the majority of them winding up on video or DVD. A former e-mail correspondent of mine recalls Dohler as "quite a character ... no fun at all." It would stand to reason that as most of his films are no fun at all either! Many of Dohler's films star John Waters regular George Stowver, who played Mr. Gravel in DESPERATE LIVING and the priest who administered last rites to Divine in FEMALE TROUBLE. Dohler's stock-in-trade was folksy, homemade special effects by backyard Harryhausens. THE ALIEN FACTOR is dreck, but dreck made by happy enthusiastic hands who do what they do out of a love for the cinema! Viewers seeking out a similar homemade vibe are encouraged to check out the films of Nathan Schiff, whose features such as THEY DON'T CUT THE GRASS ANYMORE and WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH are now out on deluxe DVDs. |
