Based on the animated series by Peter Chung, Aeon Flux imagines a future in which 99 percent of the world's population is killed through industrial disease, and the survivors live in a single city that, despite utopian appearances, is quite totalitarian. Disinclined to embrace any particular ideology outside of a hatred for Trevor Goodchild (Marton Csokas), the leader of the council that governs the walled city, hyper-sexualized assassin Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) seeks to bring about a revolution. Retaining the title character's trademark jet-black hair and sleek, revealing clothing, this film adaptation fleshes out the story behind the sexual and romantic tension between Aeon and Trevor. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

The writing team of Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi had written several well-regarded scripts before tackling Aeon Flux, an adaptation of the popular MTV animated series. While the finished product garnered mixed reviews, a talk with the affable writers gives one a new appreciation for the process of creating a big budget adaptation, as well as the hard road to becoming a working screenwriter. A box-office disaster of major proportions, the Hollywood/German AEON FLUX is certainly an oddity. Cast quite well and interestingly (Charlize Theron, Sophie Okonedo ("Hotel Rwanda"), Frances McDormand, Jonny Lee Miller, Pete Postlethwaite, Amelia Warner and the craggily handsome Marton Csokas), it is one of those rare sci-fi movies that captures the "future" amazingly well. In fact, you can almost be hypnotized by the visuals here.

Story-wise, it's more interesting and much less confusing than critics let on (one does sometimes wonder about their IQ-level). Written by several fellows but directed rather well by Karyn Kusama ("Girlfight"), the movie accomplishes what any decent action/sci-fi flick should: providing entertainment, bringing up a few worthwhile notions about life as we know it, and providing ample eye candy via its cast, costumes and sets. Although I know little about the movie's provenance (something to do with an MTV short?), "Aeon Flux" fills the bill quite nicely, while offereing a short running time so as not to outstay its welcome. It'll find its true audience on DVD.
