Recorded in the wake of the phenomenal success with the screen adaptation of Cabaret, Liza with a Z features Liza Minnelli performing over a dozen songs under the direction of Bob Fosse. This special originally aired on network television. The setlist includes renditions of "God Bless the Child," "Son of a Preacher Man," "Bye Bye Blackbird," and a medley of songs from Cabaret. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

As good as you've probably heard, this over-30-year-old but newly restored TV show bristles with the combined talent, energy and creativity of Bob Fosse, composers Kander and Ebb and of course LIZA WITH A Z herself--Liza Minnelli. Although the star has had her ongoing troubles with drugs and self-image, she comes across wonderfully well here, and not just in the original show (when she was young and fit) but also in the DVD extras such as her recent appearances at the Toronto Film Festival and the GLAAD awards (at the latter, singing a terrific Charles Aznavour song).
If the Fosse choreography sometimes grows a bit much (as in the "Son of a Preach Man" number) it's more often electric, riveting and tons of fun ("Ring Them Bells"). And Liza is... a star. Older audience will already know what to expect, but it would be nice if some youngsters took a look and discovered what open-hearted, open-throated singing sounds like, when it isn't non-stop wailing, occasionally on tune, a la "American Idol." And really now, you don't HAVE to be gay to appreciate Ms. Minnelli. |
