The Poseidon Adventure (Special Edition) (1972)
The Poseidon, an ocean liner larger than the Queens Elizabeth and Mary combined, is charting its course on New Year's Eve. Just after midnight, Captain Harrison (Leslie Nielsen) spots the mother of all tidal waves. It is the last thing that Harrison and practically everyone else onboard sees before drowning -- the Poseidon is turned upside down, with only a handful of survivors. The ten lucky ones -- including Mike Rogo (Ernest Borgnine), Linda Rogo (Stella Stevens), Acres (Roddy McDowall), Belle Rosen (Shelley Winters), and Manny Rosen (Jack Albertson) -- led by no-nonsense minister Frank Scott (Gene Hackman), desperately attempt to climb from the top of the ship (now submerged) to the bottom (now "the top"). The film's theme song, "The Morning After," sung by Maureen McGovern, earned an Oscar. In addition, The Poseidon Adventure received the Special Achievement Award for Special Effects; L.B. Abbott and A.D. Flowers were the recipients. A sequel, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, came out in 1979. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

or Borgnine yells for 2 hours... by Alicat July 7, 2006 - 9:08 AM PDT
I have always been a fan of this film - not because I thought it particularly good but because of the shher cheese of it all. Watching it again for the first time in a while I see how dated it is. The new version "Poseidon" is more glossy and real looking but it really lacks...well it really lacks Shelly Winters swimming underwater trying to save The Preacher man.
What give the 1972 film its ability to stand the test of time are the fantasticly over the top performances. Remember the dude who played "Grandpa Joe" in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? He is the jewish husband to Shelly Winters over-Jewish wife. He rocks! And Gene Hackman as the rebel precher who tells you exactly who he is the first time we see him aboard ship. For real! He launches into a great speech that could have been side notes in the script about his character. So great!
And Stella Stevens in a 2 hour long screaming match with her on screen hubby Mr. Borgnine. How could that be wrong? She is an ex hooker who has to escape a sinking ship in her underwear!
I could go on but I won't. I'll just say that it is these small touches that are lost in the glossy, ramped up 2006 version.
