| A conventional movie-music bio, WALK THE LINE entertains and has a good deal of energy for the first hour or so--due mostly to the fine performances by Witherspoon and Phoenix. But once the drugs and rehab kick in, not to mention the withholding father figure, it's just too much paint-by-numbers (different characters but not that dissimilar to what let the air out of the Ray Charles biopic). Can't these musical artistes find ANYTHING better to do than drugs? Guess not. Goes with the territory. Still, when you've seen this kind of thing portrayed dozens of times already, it does get a mite tiring for us older folk. |
