Like her "Beau Travail" but less so, Clair Denis' THE INTRUDER is another of the most overrated films of the past couple of years. Visually interesting from time to time, it offers a slight story, minimal characterization and far too much stream of consciousness and try-to-connect-the-dots moviemaking for my taste.
There are themes aplenty--mortality, immigration, organ trafficking, the animal/human conundrum, to name a few. But everything is filtered so completely through the mind of Ms. Denis, with little regard for those who might be viewing the finished product. It's like watching someone else's dream: linear for awhile, then bizarre, sometimes incomprehensible and finally boring. After garnering so much praise in some circles, the film will probably be a must-see for many. For me, it bordered on a waste of time. |
