| Hawthorne's classic re-imagined first as a Harlequin bodice-ripper, then transformed into every PC cliche imaginable: ersatz anachronistic feminism combined with the usual deep thoughts about white male crimes against Africans and Native Americans, and the evils of the repression of free love and irresponsible procreation by pasty-faced hypocritical Protestants. By some accident they left out the footage showing how all this sort of thing leads inevitably to pedophilia, the military-industrial complex, and global warming. Really, if you're going to do something transformative with a fusty old classic that you secretly hate (and have never read anyway), why not try something original? I cannot imagine what led fine actors like Duvall and Oldman to participate in this film. Demi Moore's involvement is all too comprehensible. |
