Long on plot and even longer on coincidence, DEAD BODIES takes a few interesting twists, then a few more, topped with several others and finally--that's right--overdoses completely, leaving the viewer never bored but also never convinced. Seemingly bent on showing us how "dark" we all can be, this strange movie--made, I believe, for Irish television--succeeds mostly in showing us how much its writer Derek Landy and director Robert Quinn want us to believe how dark we all can be.
The film was nominated for seven--count 'em--IFTAs (Ireland's films and television awards) and actually won three of these. On the basis of this, I think it best to imagine that each year Ireland makes few films for theatrical or TV distribution. Very few. If you're a mystery addict, you'll add this to your list; otherwise, it barely squeaks into the realm of the average. Kelly Reilly ("Mrs. Henderson Presents," "L'Auberge Espagnole," "Russian Dolls") does her usual top job, and the rest of the cast is as convincing as the plot allows. |
