While much of the attention given Brokeback Mountain surrounded its gay themes, it is ultimately a very simple, very common romantic trope: a couple meets, falls in love, separates, each partner creates a life, and then the lovers are reunited in later years, prevented by circumstance from fulfilling their old passion.
What stands out in Brokeback Mountain is not just the particular reasons that the couple can't fulfill their love, but the stateliness and dignity with which the story is told.
Also, as a side note, I loved the interiors and cars that were carefully set to each period as the story progressed. The high-end 1970s Texas house where Jack spends a tense Thanksgiving is classic. |

Brokeback Mountain is the best film to come out in many a year. Script and screenplay were excellent . Directing unblemished.Cinematography was sweeping and breathtaking, and only added to the love affair as did the musical score.
Actors were actors to the core, and did a wonderful job of putting across the heart breaking , gut wrenching love that could not be satisfied by their distance from each other, but even with that distance they had each other for 20 some years , and that in itself shows their love for each other as not just being physical, but on the level of soul-mates.
As every muscle in your body yearns for the sight of that loved-one and the pain will not subside for want of that person. Ennis and Jack had that forbidden love for each other and it played out like the great love affair it was . If any say that this is a film just about gays , then I feel sorry for you , as you have missed a great part of life not to see that this is related to everyone who has gone over to the doorway and retched from the pain in your guts. It is humanity as bad or as good as it gets...

What's left to say? Only that Heath Ledger's amazing implosion of a performance wipes the floor with anything else I've seen this past year. While every actor does well, as we've come to expect from an Ang Lee film, Ledger is near perfection. He captures the past of this cowboy, his inability to feel and deal--and he makes us experience the hurt of all this, deeply.
The groundbreaking BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is now a part of our social, political and movie history and will probably remain as telling, sad and difficult a love story fifty or one hundred years hence. I would like to hope that viewers then will wonder at the difficulties men underwent in expressing their love and be grateful that times have changed for the better. Nice to dream about, but given human history till now, I rather doubt it. |
