Set amidst the gender-bending tumult of the Madrid nightclub scene, this black and twisted Spanish comedy features excerpts from the lives of a number of offbeat characters. First there is Max, a gigolo who has returned to Madrid to rekindle an affair with Yeye, the lover he betrayed. Max is a murder suspect and is pursued by a psychotic cop. Yeye's roommates are the nymphomaniacal Monica and lovesick Maria, who yearns for the love of her neighbor Carlos. Then there is Alberto, a gay fellow who finds innocent solace in the arms of the heterosexual David after learning that his latest lover Alex is married with children. The main character's lives converge at a series of parties and club hopping sprees all of which are presided over by a trio of lavishly made-up drag queens. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

As a movie-lover who has flipped for the work of filmmaking duo Alfonso Albacete and David Menkes ("I Love You Baby," "Sobrevivire"), and more recently for Miguel Bardem ("Incautos"), I was delighted to discover that the 1996 Spanish film NOT LOVE, JUST FRENZY was directed by all three. The movie is not a tri-part compilation, however; it's all of a piece. (I'd love to learn just how the directorial chores were divided). While "Love/Frenzy" is not wholly successful, it holds your interest, is never less than competent and sometimes rises to much more than that.
There is a dark quality here than doesn't always jell with the rest of the film (particularly in the final scene). After mulling over this trio's further work, I posit that it may be Bardem who brings that darker sensibility, so perhaps it's best that he went his own way--quite well, if Incautos" is any indication--and the duo went theirs, making joyous, thoughtful, rich films about sexuality, gender and love. These three themes carry "Love/Frenzy" on its alternately merry/bizarre way, but they don't mesh as well as they might, particularly when death is added to the mix.
The cast is appealing--gorgeous and talented--and the story rife with mistaken identity, misunderstanding and outright deception. Comparisons have been made to Almodovar, and while they are apt, this film neither rises to Pedro's early heights of crazy comedy nor descends to his manic, over-the-top distortions. There's a nice and easy approximation of reality captured by (one or more of) the directorial trio that makes some comic scenes even funnier but other expository moments a bit draggy. Yet what a pleasure to encounter this decade-old example of Post-Franco filmmaking that unites three talented men who most likely will not work together again. |

| Looking for some "Sexy" trash, a touch of mystery, brutality, tears and backstabbing with some hilarious moments, check this one out. Some steamy hot hetero. sex opens the film with what appears to end up as a brutal murder. Then it's time to start meeting the other characters (and more sex), straight, gay (hot, steamy gay sex), bi, trans (lesbian and transsexual anyone??), whatever... A really bizarre film at times but loads of outrageous partying; nudity ...(male & female);lots of twists, turns and complications among the main characters. Rather graphic and often hilarious... Yet unbelievable as it all seems, the naturalness of the performances and direction made it all work. "Not Love, Just Frenzy'" An appropriate title. |
