Don't imagine that, simply because you're an adult, NANNY McPHEE is not for you. This fairy tale of nannies, naughty children, a deceased parent and love uniting the classes (it's British, so of course) is ever so much fun, thanks to the sterling acting and screenplay from Emma Thompson. Ms Thompson gives such a quiet, strong performance that she puts to shame so many of the "louder" variety that we see from our actors on this side of the pond.

Everyone in the cast (including Angela Lansbury and Derek Jacobi) is quite delightful, and the sets and costumes are among the most colorful and creative in a long while. (Where was this film when the Academy handed out its awards for these endeavors?) The special effects may be few and rather unprepossessing, but they are near-perfect in accomplishing their specific goals (the bridal gown is one of the loveliest bits of visual magic I can remember). Whether you've kids or no, do yourself a favor a rent this charming film.
