Jerzy Hoffman, Polands foremost director of historical epics (THE DELUGE, WITH FIRE AND SWORD) opts for a change of pace with an exotic cinematic adventure based on novel by Aleksei Tolstoy. A Russian lieutenant impresses his superiors by standing up to Rasputinthe Mad Monk himself. He is rewarded with a mission to carry vital documents to Stockholm, but en route he falls in love with a spy, known only as the Beautiful Stranger. The knowledge that she is determined to steal his secret cargo at any cost forces a conflict between love and duty for the young lieutenant. This romantic thriller is invigorated by a stellar cast of veteran Russian and Polish actors, including Grazyna Szapolowska (DECALOGUE, PAN TADEUSZAS) as the Beautiful Stranger.
