A nuclear weapon has been stolen by the most powerful gang in Paris' treacherous, walled-in ghetto, and it's up to a determined cop and a vigilante criminal in search of his sister to infiltrate the sector, save the girl, and get the bomb out of the bad guys' hands in an action-packed tale produced by Luc Besson and directed by cinematographer Pierre Morel. The year is 2010, and a massive wall has been erected to keep the violence of the Paris ghetto confined to District B13. Within these walls, gangs rules the streets and law enforcement is powerless. This time the gangs have gone too far, though, and when the authorities realize that a nuclear weapon has been smuggled into the district, specially trained policeman and martial artist Damien is assigned the task of retrieving the weapon of mass destruction before Paris goes up in flames. He's not going to be able to do it on his own, though, and when Damien learns that breakaway bad guy Leïto's sister has been abducted by the very same gang, the pair soon forges a tentative partnership that merges the power of law enforcement with the anything-goes attitude of the criminal element. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

If you're an action fan, you'll definitely like this one. We've been working our way through recommended action films, and District B-13 ranks near the top. The plot is lean and simple, which is just fine -- a nice double-cross is worked in, as is enough political sensibility to lend the movie some weight. But it doesn't get bogged down, and the action, stunts, and fights are superb.
One note: it would be nice to watch this without subtitles, in order to concentrate on the action, but the dubbing really isn't good enough. The acting is surprisingly solid for a movie like this, so do yourself a favor and keep the french dialogue, turn on the subtitles.

The Antagonist overshadows the 2 protagonists with his acting abilities (apparently he is popular in France as a Comic actor). The 2 protagonists have good action skills, however the cop overdoes his part a tad bit too much. The leading lady is there as an eye candy (nothing much to write about her).
If you want to watch a variation of a marital arts action flic, this movie provides a close cousin. |

| Short, surprisingly smart for an action movie and filled by exciting, beautifully thought-thru stunt work, DISTRICT B-13 is a treat from first to last. It has a sense of politics and economics, too, as it brings the white and off-white worlds together in splendid, almost-believable fashion. And the plot is terrific: tight and lean and better than most in this genre. Best line: the combo of liberty, equality, fraternity with gas, water and electricity. Clever stuff, this! Don't miss it. (And if you don't like subtitles, the disc comes with an English-dubbed version, too.) |
