As the foppish, sexually ambiguous, brilliant singer/songwriter of the 80s music legend The Smiths, Morrissey brought intelligence, wit and mystery to pop tunes still unmatched in their ability to make grown men cry. In this intimate documentary, filmmaker William E. Jones interviews a new, but equally fanatical, fan base of The Smiths and Morrissey: Latino youths in East Los Angeles. Making the connection between The Smiths' working-class, Manchester-raised, ethnic Irish experience and that of the sons and daughters of Mexican immigrants in Los Angeles, Is It Really So Strange? is the first documentary that allows the fans themselves to speak at length about their lives, their loves and their brief encounters with their idol. Interviews with members of tribute band The Sweet and Tender Hooligans reveal even more about Morrissey's enduring appeal among the pompadoured denizens of the Inland Empire who, as one fan puts it, relate to Morrissey because "he always sounds sad and depressed and lonely...all the good stuff."

Ohmigawd. Let me just say that I was SOOOO excited when I found out about this movie: what could be cooler than getting a glimpse at a whole other community of folks as obsessed w/ Morrissey and the Smiths as my friends and I are? The concept and description of this movie made me so happy that I even invited friends over to make taquitos and watch it together. BUT!!! Alas, this movie was HELLA BORING!!! I couldn't believe it. No real thread, no character development- not even ANY music throughout the entire film- in a movie about one of the greatest musicians ever! At first I thought maybe they couldn't get the rights to the songs or something, but then, there at the very end as the credits rolled, came "this charming man" and that's when I really lost it. Man, this whole thing is just a tragedy because it would have been fairly easy to make this an amazing film, but somehow the dude just totally effed it up. Total, total bummer. |
| Interesting, but really slow and there's NO music.

| Yes, you read that correctly, there is no music in the film. None at all. How can you have a documentary focusing on the fans of a music group/artist and not play their music? Not even as background music. |
