One of the most beloved popular music scenes in the world, tango's traditional music and dance has become a local and international obsession. This faithful and exhilarating representation of the 5th Buenos Aires Tango Festival brings to the screen all the squeezes of the accordion, quick kicks, and guttural songs of heartbreak, deceit and national pride. Today's biggest names in tango perform onstage and off, from the hilariously tense preparations to dozens of performances and intimate interviews with established and rising stars. Over the course of nine days, the documentary captures the most thrilling moments of an event featuring 300 couples from around the world, 9 stages and multitudes of spectators (estimated to have been more than 200,000). The electricity is palpable at the massive open-air performances as the excitable throngs along Corrientes Avenue are easily and happily coerced into belting along to their most cherished tangos. Refusing to be a mere elegy, both the festival and the film do their part to prove tango is not a legacy, but a living and constantly evolving art form.
