Proving that you can never guess what you'll find when you clean out the basement, a man of the cloth discovers that ultimate evil has made a hiding place in his cellar in this tale of terror. Father Loomis (Donald Pleasance) is a priest who discovers a strange object in a church basement -- a canister filled with a swirling and volatile green substance. With the help of Professor Birack (Victor Wong), Loomis discovers the startling truth about his find -- it seems that Satan, who is actually an alien life form, had a son, and the essence of the devil's spawn is trapped inside the canister. The evil spirit has been guarded by a group calling themselves "The Brotherhood of Sleep," but the spirit has the ability to free itself whenever it decides the time is right...and it seems that time is just around the corner. Prince of Darkness was directed by horror master John Carpenter; he also wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym Martin Quatermass. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The best John Carpenter film ever! by larbeck July 17, 2003 - 10:55 PM PDT

Something weird is happening. A physics professor (wonderfully played by Victor Wong) is engaged by a Catholic priest (also well done by Donald Pleasence) to investigate. It seems that there is a substance to evil and it want out, to rule the world. He comes with his grad student to check it all out.

When Alice Cooper has asked to be in this movie, his first question was, "Only if I get to kill someone" and of course, if you have Alice Cooper in a horror film, he is going to kill someone. He has a part as one of many homeless possessed, bascially zombies. Dennis Dun (who along with Victor Wong were also in "Big Trouble in Little China") also has some very good moments, especially a freakout scene that sticks in my mind.

Now, this is NOT an action picture, but more of a psychological horror film with a bit of quantum physics thrown in. And the great, great heartbeat music of John Capenter and Alan Howorth adds to the crawling of the skin and the howling of the moon. But there are some rather distrubing picture from it burned in my memory. It haunts more than gross you out.

IT IS A CRIME THAT IT IS OUT OF PRINT! A CRIME I SAY! If I see one at a flea market, I promise to send to Greencine. This film must be preserved!

My twelve-year-old daughter wants to watch scary movies. I turned to the GC'ers for assistance. I appreciate all the good input. There are a few here that, well, I may let her age a couple years first.
