Synopsis
Some 30 years after the wars between the humans and Zentradi that took place during the original series Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Earth's government is testing the possible successors to the Valkyrie transforming space fighters. Two pilots, Isamu Alva Dyson and Guld Goa Bowman, are chosen to pilot the YF-19 and the YF-21 in order to decide which one will be the Earth's new main line of defense, but these two hot-shots are so competitive that they put the entire project at risk. In addition, an old friend to both men, Myung Fan Lone, shows up, fueling the fires of jealousy. Myung also happens to be the agent for the most popular pop star in the galaxy, Sharon Apple (who is actually a hologram), fulfilling the "Macross" franchise tradition of including rock and pop stars as key plot figures. Macross Plus was also released as a four-episode OVA, but it was re-edited with added material for this movie version. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

...astonishing... groundbreaking... inspiring... breathtaking... unclothed... by hneline1 May 21, 2004 - 12:18 AM PDT

From the people who brought you Escaflowne, Arjuna and Cowboy Bebop comes an astonishing remake of the groundbreaking OVA that made the original Macross look like child's play. Featuring the inspiring music of Yoko Kanno in the series that started it all for her, the 4-part Macross Plus OVA was the sensation that swept anime otaku in the early 90's because of its mind-blowing special effects and non-stop action during the dogfight scenes.

This movie version is shorter but twice as exciting as the original because of the faster paced storyline. There are fewer explanations and the slight changes to the narrative help build the rollercoaster ride to the breathtaking ending. In one expanded part, Megumi Hayashibara IS Lucy MacMillan in one her greatest, underrated roles as the spunky military girl who gets caught up in the love triangle among the main characters. Don't worry, they don't ever get naked, but you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll creme in your jeans when the AI singing star Sharon Apple takes the stage and SHE is quite tastefully unclothed.

If you see only one anime this year, see Initial D; but if you see two, think about watching this classic that many consider the first truthful work of the legendary Shinichiro Watanabe and Yoko Kanno. In a world and at a time where no one thought animation could be so spine tingling, they dared to be on The Edge.

[Aside: Just imagine a live action version by Tarantino starring Keanu Reeves coming soon to a theatre near you. If Quentin can pull it off, that is what great filmmaking is all about. Thumbs way up!]

Is the movie edition better than the OVA? by NLee February 2, 2003 - 9:05 PM PST

First there is the Macross Plus 4-part OVA series. Then, there is also the movie edition. Which version should you watch?

The movie edition is more compact and fast-pace. It condensed the 180-minute OVA down to about 110 minutes, then added about 10 minutes of new footage (mostly on special effects of Sharon Apple, and the final dog-fight between Guld and The Ghost).

That's all very good with me. My biggest complaint with the movie edition is its video quality, which is just not as good as it could be on a DVD. As a matter of fact, I compared the video of this DVD to my VHS tape version of the same movie, and the two versions looked almost identical! In contrast, the OVA editon on DVD gives much more vivid colors and sharper images.

In conclusion, you'll probably be satisfied no matter which version you choose. However, if you only watch dubbed anime (shame on you), better choose the OVA because the movie edition is only available in Japanese with permanent English subtitles.

I have gone throught the entire list of anime that GC has to offer and I have come up with these titles that sounded interesting. I particularly like anime with comedy and action

The 5 on top are my favorite One Disc rentals for people who don't like the wait between volumes for anime series.
