V for Vendetta (Special Edition) (2006)
Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, V for Vendetta takes place in an alternate vision of Britain in which a corrupt and abusive totalitarian government has risen to complete power. During a threatening run in with the secret police, an unassuming young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) is rescued by a vigilante named V (Hugo Weaving) -- a caped figure both articulate and skilled in combat. V embodies the principles of rebellion from an authoritarian state, donning a mask of vilified would-be terrorist of British history Guy Fawkes and leading a revolution sparked by assassination and destruction. Evey becomes his unlikely ally, newly aware of the cruelty of her own society and her role in it. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

Watching V cut a rug across a government that seems tighter than the communist reigns anywhere, the only thing in dismay I must say is that it seemed all too easy. The wordplay between Weaving and Portman is excellent. The action ballet seems only to drive the plot along. I had only glimpsed the comic book, but watching this film made me want to check it out. I saw that a few of the previous reviewers mentioned this as a "popcorn" flick. I would imagine that would be the film snob in them cause I didn't see anything besides a couple of well timed explosions that would make me think of this as a "popcorn" flick. Definitely not in the vein of the Matrix or Star Wars movies.
It's funny though watching this movie about a government overthrow and thinking about our own inept government.
Things that make you go hmmmmmm.
A great movie with great acting all around.

Ahhh... a popcorn movie I really enjoyed! I was wiggling all over with delight at being pummeled and teased with dialogue and ideas that were as sharp and powerful as the action onscreen. I don't think there has been any film like this. Even "The Matrix" pales greatly in comparison because although that's an intelligent film, it is 'far out fantasy' enough to be safe for audiences. There is no threat, and one doesn't really have to think very much if they don't want to because the action and production values easily draw you into distraction.

This story - set twenty years or so into the future - shows Britain as a leading world power. Apparently the US has had a political and economic meltdown due to an unbridled plague of leprosy that one can guess was a result of government negligence in the field of biochemical warfare. Britain has had its own disaster with plague - 80,000 dead - but a certain faction in the government managed to curtail the disaster with a wonder drug that kept everyone safe. And so, the people gratefully embraced this new element in their government, despite its obvious fashion theft of Mussolini's Squadrusti uniforms and a cryptic banner that sort of looks like an inverted Swastika with the Christian cross.

This is my only complaint with the movie. As big-scale entertainment, it gets an A+, and it gets all sorts of high marks in the ideas and dialogue department. But it fails in the way that some of the liberal movements today fail in. They insist on forcing images of reactionaries into the familiar Hitler/Stalin/Mussolini mode. The fact is; fascism prevails not by looking like a circus of Darth Vaders. Fascism prevails when it comes as a populist reflection of the society that it believes the people want to see represented. We're all wary of goose-stepping columns of soldiers and May Day parades displaying their sexy new weapons of mass destruction. It's recognizable, so governments in the West stay clear of such imagery (though it's amazing how the news coverage of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" constantly bombarded us with such imagery. It doesn't seem to bother Westerners when their militarism is policing other nations). This film's message would have been far more powerful if it had showed us a government that wasn't so blatantly trying to outdo Michael Radford's "1984". But then we wouldn't get to admire all the incredible production values and powerful crowd scenes, and this is entertainment with a big 'E' after all, so I will give the filmmakers some slack. This movie is a giant-sized box of Cracker Jack, which most people will gobble up as the delicious junk food that it is. But do take a look at the treasures tucked inside. They have an angle on terrorism that has yet to be discussed by politicians or the media.

"v for vendetta" works passably well as a popcorn picture that is more akin to the "matrix" movies than the justly acclaimed comic in execution, but what i really want to know is, what's up with reviewing the dvd on july 26th or 28th if it is listed as coming out on August 1st? do people score an advance copy of the disc under review, or are we just reliving our memories of the theatrical experience? I hope the first is the case, because if the latter is what's going on, that's more than a bit shady on a number of levels...
