One of those increasingly numerous movies that operates on the who's-killing-whom-and-why, what-the-hell-is-happening, stories-within-stories mode, LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN also happens to be among the best (of late). If it's not up to "The Usual Suspects," well, then, what is? Directed by Scotsman Paul McGuigan ("Gangster No. 1," "The Reckoning") and written by first-time screenwriter Jason Smilovic, it boasts a cast that you probably would not walk away from under any circumstances: Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley (oh--Sir, I forgot!), Lucy Liu, Bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci and--repress that laugh!--Josh Hartnett.
Mr. Hartnett has been given a bad rap, mostly because he's chosen to appear in films that have proven pretty awful upon completion: "Pearl Harbor," "Wicker Park" (from Mr. McGuigan!), "Town and Country," "Here on Earth," etc. Yet this actor is often quite good in his own low-key but intelligent manner (try "O," "Blow Dry" or even "Hollywood Homicide"). Here he helps ground the entire movie (along with the funny, fine work from Willis and Liu). The whole cast seems to be right on target, as is the screenplay--which is clever and quirky while managing to come together is a manner befitting the very dark subject matter at the movie's core. McGuigan, Smilovic and the cast honor this darkness, while providing one hell of a good time in the process. |
