From its surprising opening line--"Stupid boy!"--KINKY BOOTS continues now and again to catch its audience a bit unaware, even if it is basically another feel-good movie. It also honors craftsmanship in the workplace (there aren't too many recent films that bother with this apparently outdated concept), while giving a grand--and hugely different--opportunity to Brit black Chiwetel Ejiofor, who, it would appear, can handle just about any role. From "Dirty Pretty Things" to "Twelfth Night," "Love Actually," "Melinda and Melinda," "Four Brothers," "Serenity" and now this one--in which he plays a drag queen, sings his own songs (quite well) and models clothes and shoes like the pro he is, Ejiofor never missteps. Some of his movies may suck, but the guy himself can do no wrong.

Here he is bolstered by Aussie actor Joel Edgerton ("The Hard Word," "Ned Kelley" "King Arthur"), Sarah-Jane Potts, Jemima Rooper and writing by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth that is nuanced and offers some interesting ideas about men and work. The film is not great (over-long, it squanders its momentum) but it's good enough. Director Julian Jarrold has worked almost exclusively in television (some of it--"White Teeth"--very fine indeed), and he manages, after a spot of worry, to bring the movie home.
