On the eve of his third wedding, documentary filmmaker Caveh Zahedi bravely turns the camera on himself to explore his decade-long addiction to sex in an autobiographical tale of personal peccadillo featuring animation from Waking Life artist Bob Sabiston and featuring a rare film appearance by French porn legend Rebecca Lord. His previous marriages destroyed by his obsession with prostitutes and his many intimate relationships sabotaged by his unwavering commitment to the concept of open relationships, Zahedi boldly bares his soul before the camera to offer a comic look at the life of one man who truly can't get enough. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
GreenCine Says:
I am a Sex Addict (2005; $19.45). Caveh Zahedi (who we interviewed awhile back and now interviews himself) made waves with this "breathtaking high-wire act that combines fact and fiction, drama and self-deprecating humor, honesty and self-delusion, home movies and animation" (Marjorie Baumgarten in the Austin Chronicle). A "consistently witty and inventive lark," wrote Bright Lights Film Journal. "Mischievous, and hardly the most reliable narrator, [Zahedi] presents this playful meta-vaudeville as part documentary, part dramatization with actors, and all narcissistic reflection on his life as a horndog."

| Caveh Zahedi's I AM A SEX ADDICT (he writes, directs and stars) might be considered a vanity production, and of course it is. But in this case, some--not all--of the vanity is deserved. Zahedi has a charming faux naiveté and a quick wit that undercut his character's pomposity and stupidity, and his story of his sex addiction is pretty clever and funny. Up to a point. Each viewer's individual point will vary; mine arrived around halfway thru, when deadlines beckoned louder than the film. I would never "not" recommend it, however, since I do not know what happened down the line and it did, after all, entertain me pleasantly for a time. |
