A simple look at the debates regarding sex education in public schools becomes a dramatic journey of self-discovery for a teenage girl in this documentary from directors Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt. Shelby Knox is a young woman who at first sees eye-to-eye with the strict, traditional Christians in her community regarding sexuality's place in her high school. But as she explores the issue as the subject of this film, Shelby begins to question the longheld beliefs that she was brought up with, leading to a drastic difference of opinion with her parents that threatens the fabric of their family. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Shelby Knox is a young girl from the VERY conservative Christian town of Lubbock, Texas. This documentary truly shows Shelby come of age as she learns to stand up and question her (parents) beliefs as she fights for sex education (and later gay rights) in the classroom. It's a very honest and interesting portrayal of the obstacles that stand in the way of those trying to makes changes in the system. Shelby's parents disagree with her choices, but support her throughout her quest.
Additionally, it provides insight into the alleged seperation of church and state and the role that the school takes on religion in schools. The footage provides interviews and accounts with those who have influenced Shelby's beliefs from an early age including a youth pastor who promotes abstinence and her fellow schoolmate who later proves to be a political running-mate. |
