armed with a script from larry cohen and a sturdy cast of "b" movie stars, director william lustig turns in a thoughtful and gory (a combo you don't see enough of) mash-up of the urban detective drama and slasher flick. the big points of interest lie in the killer targeting "normal" members of society and--- spoiler ahead--- being a hero cop, as opposed to an outsider. apply robin wood's return of the repressed theories on horror movies to this and you'll have some fun. if you don't really give a shit about robin wood's theories, this is still a well made movie with good action, violence, thrills, and a sam raimi cameo. Lustig went on to work for anchor bay then to start blue underground, which is like the criterion collection for cult and grindhouse movies. recommended!
