A woman gets a belated introduction to the joy of sex in this comedy. Priscilla (Parker Posey) is a thirtysomething public-relations agent with the unenviable job of trying to lure new businesses to Cleveland, OH. Priscilla is married to Jack (Paul Rudd), a high-school teacher who is reaching the end of his patience with his career. Things aren't going especially well at home for Priscilla and Jack -- she seems unable to have an orgasm, and while Priscilla insists she's perfectly happy with their sex life, Jack is driven to distraction by his inability to arouse his wife. When Kristen (Mischa Barton), one of Jack's students, begins displaying an extra-curricular interest in him, he throws caution to the wind and begins an affair with her, and has soon moved out of the house. Left on her own, Priscilla finally begins feeling sexual frustration, and turns to Alyssa (Liza Minnelli), an outspoken sex therapist who advises her to learn how to pleasure herself. Alyssa's advice proved to be right on the money, and soon Priscilla is a changed women who is looking for a new man in her life. She soon finds one in Wayne (Danny DeVito), a swimming-pool salesman whose sloppy appearance belies his talent in the bedroom. The Oh in Ohio was the first feature film from director Billy Kent, who previously established himself making television commercials. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This is the first movie I've seen with Parker Posey where she doesn't seem like a robot. This is also the first movie I've seen with Danny Devito where he doesn't annoy the hell out of me.

I wanted to like the indie comedy "Oh in Ohio," I really did. And there is quite a bit to recommend about it: in particular, Parker Posey, who is wonderfully endearing here as a woman struggling to open herself up sexually while stuck in a frustrating marriage; Danny DeVito, too, is quite likeable here as the pool salesman who has a thing for her; and there are several laugh out loud scenes. But the script could have benefited from several more drafts - it constantly loses focus, moving over to the story of Posey's estranged husband Paul Rudd (whom I always like, but his character here is such a heel, and not in a realistic, well-shaded way) and his wayward romance with a precocious student. The portrayal of a teacher-student romance is enervating and unbelieveable and even worse, takes us away from Posey too often. Characters in this film do contrived things and ultimately you'll stop caring about any of them. It's too bad, too, because it's also nice to see an American film so open and playful about sexuality and between that, the fact that it's set somewhere we rarely see in films - Ohio, and Posey's presence, I wanted to give this a thumb's up. But I was too busy wanting to strangle the filmmakers - this is their first film, and their youth shows in the wrong ways, because too often the characters other than Posey's do not behave in any believable, real way. Oh... well.
