Delmer Daves directs the noirish thriller The Red House, based on the novel by George Agnew Chamberlain. Edward G. Robinson plays Pete Morgan, a farmer who harbors dark secrets and refuses to let anyone near the red house in the woods behind the house. In order to fend off trespassers, he hires Teller (Rory Calhoun) to stand guard. He lives with his sister, Ellen (Judith Anderson), and his adopted daughter, Meg (Allene Roberts). When they hire Meg's friend, Nath Storm (Lon McCallister), to help out on the farm, the two kids start to wonder about the mysterious red house. The film features an eerie original score by Miklós Rózsa. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

| The Red House takes film noir out of the city and into the country. Edward G. Robinson is creepy as the possibly incestuous farmer. He hides a big dark secret in a rundown red house deep in the woods. His crazy rants about the dangers of the woods are ignored by his "adopted" daughter - who looks just like the love of his life - and her squeaky clean boyfriend - who's family life is called into question too after a lip-to-lip kiss with his mother just lasts too long. The film got to me and it will make your skin crawl. Back-woodsy folk were always scarier that city folk. The quality of the transfer isn't great, but I think that added to the mysterious feel of this noir. |
