Synopsis
This '80s follow-up to The Wizard of Oz is based upon two of L. Frank Baum's later Oz books. In Return to Oz (a version that may be a bit too scary for young children), Auntie Em sends Dorothy to a sanitarium where hopefully she will clear her head from all of the "Oz nonsense." This doesn't work, for soon Dorothy manages to return to Oz, but things have definitely changed. She finds her old friends turned to stone and discovers that the awful Nome King has taken over Oz. ~ All Movie Guide

Who needs CGI and Pixar when you've got oldschool claymation and animatronics? If you've already done The Wizard of Oz with Dark Side of the Moon, then take a trip down a freakier, more frightening yellow brick road. The Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion have but cameos here, while Pumpkinhead Jack, Tick Tock, and a talking hen surround the young and shining Fairuza Balk. This semi-sequel treaded the fine line between fairytale and horror and kickstarted the career of one of Hollywood's most interesting actresses. Could the film's ending be read as an ahead-of-its-time call to veganism? Check out the extras for an interview with a grown-up (and every bit as radiant) Fairuza reminding us of the importance of imagination.

My twelve-year-old daughter wants to watch scary movies. I turned to the GC'ers for assistance. I appreciate all the good input. There are a few here that, well, I may let her age a couple years first.
