Watching SIR! NO SIR! makes me realize anew that the line of bull the U.S. citizenry has been constantly fed by its current caretakers during the build-up to and since the Iraq war had its progenitors in the Vietnam era, when our government tried to mask--then annihilate--dissent from within the military itself. This documentary by David Zeiger is fascinating on several levels, not least in the manner that it demonstrates how patriotic Jane Fonda truly was. This will, of course, drive certain Americans around the proverbial bend, but here it is, for all to see.

Revisionist history is now trying to tell us that the Domino Theory was actually true so that our complete and abysmal failure in Vietnam was some kind of nut-job triumph, and I am sure that the powers-that-be are this minute concocting some black-is-white scenario of how and why our destruction of Iraq is somehow meaningful and necessary. View "Sir! No, Sir!" as soon as you can, if only as an intelligent and hard-won deterrent to shameful government propaganda--whether it be from the United States, Germany (Ophuls' "The Memory of Justice" and "Hotel Terminus"), France ("The Eye of Vichy") or anywhere else. Historically, no country or people possesses a monopoly on sleazy wartime propaganda, but the United States of America has certainly cornered the market for the time being.
