Once more assembling a group of nonprofessional actors, French filmmaker Robert Bresson produced another of his powerful slice-of-life efforts. The title character is a 14-year-old girl, weighed down by a lonely existence, an alcoholic father, and a dying mother. Seeking escape, Mouchette becomes attracted to an inebriated poacher, who takes advantage of her vulnerability by raping her, ultimately leading to tragic consequences. Mouchette was based on a novel by Georges Bernanos, the same writer responsible for the source of Bresson's best-known film, Diary of a Country Priest. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
