Billy Wilder directs the lighthearted romantic comedy Sabrina, based on the play by Samuel A. Taylor. Sabrina Fairchild (Audrey Hepburn) is the simple, naïve daughter of a chauffeur, Thomas Fairchild (John Williams). They live on an estate with the wealthy Oliver Larrabee (Walter Hampden) and his two sons: workaholic older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) and fun-loving younger brother David (William Holden). Sabrina adores the charming David, but he thinks of her as just a kid. Her father sends her away to Paris for chef school, where she meets Baron St. Fontanel (Marcel Dalio), and she returns a worldly, sophisticated woman. David immediately falls for her, but he is already engaged to marry heiress Elizabeth Tyson (Martha Hyer). Sabrina wants to break up the wedding in order to finally catch the man of her dreams, while Linus fights to keep the marriage on in the interest of family business and Mr. Tyson's (Francis X. Bushman) fortune. In order to keep Sabrina away from David, Linus pretends to court her himself. In doing so, they eventually realize their true feelings for each another. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

| Enjoyable, but Sabrina hasn't aged as well as other films from Wilder or Hepburn. To the modern viewer, the romantic triangle at the heart of the picture, seems driven by lechery and blatant social climbing. Hepburn is fascinating to watch and--like a hard-boiled Ayn Rand--Bogart delivers a hilarious monologue on the altruistic drive of the businessman. He just wants to build factories in out-of-the-way parts of the world so the newly gentrified workers will be able to go to the picture show. Bless his heart. |

Of all the Cinderella Hollywood remakes, this is the very best. Sabrina is filled with wonderful actors and Audrey sparkles. Billy Wilder and the studio adapted the play specifically for Audrey Hepburn. The role fits her like a glove, she is allowed to be glamorous, naturally funny, intelligent and kind.
The role of hard as steel businessman Linus Larrabee, played by Humphrey Bogart originally was to go to Cary Grant. Though, it would be hard to argue with Cary Grant, I think the movie benefited for the late substitution. It is great to see Bogart in a romantic comedy and he played wonderfully off William Holden, his playboy brother. Bogart, despite the title, was actually the central character in the film. It is Linus who grows and changes and eventually evolves.
Besides the wonderful performances, this is the beginning of a wonderful love affair(platonic) between Audrey Hepburn and Givenchy. Though Edith Head received an Oscar for costume design, all the gowns were imported from Paris. Edith only designed the pre-Paris outfits. Though it isn't until Funny Face, that the two names become tied, it is actually Sabrina that brought the two together on film. This really is the beginning of movie stars and fashion designers. Before this stars wore what their studio and fashion icons like Edith Head, told them to. Audrey Hepburn, along with a handful of other stars at the time, created, "Who is she wearing?".
