There are simultaneous messages to enjoy here in Jesus Camp. It's an amazing look at a sect of Christianity that combines seemingly daily mystical experiences with civic minded political action (take over by voting and/or running for political office). It delivers a hard important look at the political aspirations of the Evangelical movement while managing to remain focused on the very human story of children who are led to believe its tenets. But this film goes even beyond the particulars of brainwashing children, or the rise of conservative christians as a political power in the context of the Bush administration. It reminds you that all religions brainwash their kids at an early age, and they could have picked any number of sects to make this film about and gotten the essentially same story. The main story of interest here though, is that Evangelicals don't like that Americans are free to sin as they choose, want to institute a theocracy, have the growing power to start making that a reality, and that God is telling them directly to do these things, on a daily basis. Scary, fascinating, and engrossing!
