I remember when I first saw this movie, twenty years ago, how excited I was, both sexually and intellectually. It was amazing and refreshing in that era to see such an uninhibited attitude towards gay sex, transsexuals, traditional gender roles, drug use, and other subjects that were then virtually taboo in American films. (The first scene, recreating the filming and dubbing of a gay porno flick, sets the "we're not in Kansas anymore" tone.) You may recognize some of these same subjects from Almodovar's current films, but they are all in place, and brilliantly so, in Law of Desire. A DVD has been long in coming--maybe Antonio Banderas didn't want to be seen in a gay role (no nudity from young Toni in this movie) and bought up the rights? (I am only half-joking here.) While I have not seen the DVD transfer, I hope that the washed-out color and hard-to-read subtitles have been fixed. This review is to encourage you to check this little-known work of the Almodovar canon.
