...first, as a dumb, over-the-top crime/action movie. It succeeds at that decently, despite a somewhat shaky premise (and even shakier medical science.) Great setpiece scenes, lots of violence, and while the writing isn't great, yes, a sense of humor. Solid B+.
It's also, however, somewhere between a very clever homage and a loving parody of a certain genre of crime video games; if you know and play them, then this film can be appreciated on an additional level. It succeeds at that in a way that an official video-game tie-in film (if there ever is one) is remarkably unlikely to capture. |

| Jason Statham has reinvented himself as a leading action hero. Unfortunately, all of his newer movies lack the dialog and plot that made his Guy Richie movies (Lock Stock, Snatch, etc.) such hits. Make no mistake- he's incredibly talented as an action hero. (Check out the Transporter.) But Crank comes across as just pure gratuitious everything - sex, drugs, violence...you name it - and with the shakiest of plotlines to support it. It requires enough suspension of disbelief to believe Ted Haggart is now straight (Get the crank reference anyone?). The redeeming quality of Crank seems to be that it's so gratuitious it's almost comical- as though you're constantly waiting for the punchline of what they are going to throw at you next. And the non-stop action keeps you entertained in that "don't have to think at all" way. |

| I really enjoyed this movie- The action was non-stop and Jason Statham is the new "stong man" in Hollywood. |
