Geobreeders: Breakthrough back to product details

Just Another Good Anime -- Mostly

I like "Geobreeders"! "Breakthrough" is longer than the first series (4 episodes on the disk), and tells a much more rambling story. The rather uncomfortable mixture of bloody violence and oddball, cartoony slapstick that characterized the first series is back, but here the changes in tone can feel sudden and jarring. Some may find this series almost plotless, but I think that has more to do with the fact that the original audience already knew the story from the manga, so the producers made no effort to explain what this "phantom cat" business is all about. It's not too hard to grasp the general idea, however.

On the plus side, the animation is technically good, and I love the character designs. There's fanservice aplenty, and the usual Kagura Total Security mayhem carries the day. Some of the scenes are remarkably good, such as the long sequence in which the army seiges a big telocommunications building held by the cats. If you liked the first series, you'll want to see this one.

For violence, I'd be careful about letting kids watch the show unless you check it first. The disk has good extras, including original trailers, an unusually large number of character sketches and designs, and some director interviews and other video taken at the Big Apple Anime Fest over Labor Day Weekend, 2001 -- so long, long ago...
