DeSade. Czechoslovakia. Asylums. Animation. Free Will. The tar-and-feather treatment. Humanity, in all its disgusting, pointless hypocrisy. Oh--and religion. Have I left anything out? Yes, but believe me, filmmaker Jan Svankmajer has not. It's all here, but by golly, after a time it all seems rather second-hand. Except perhaps for that animated meat that keeps popping up and out and all about. Even this, funny and original as it seems at first, soon loses its novelty. I am perplexed that this film is taken all that seriously. I'd call it an "attempt." OK: crucify me, as the Marquis and his faux physicians would probably have done.
