The meaning in a hawk's eyes when it gazes at prey is unmistakable. Griffith's prey is in his sights as he steps up campaigns both against the invading Empire of Chuder, and against the conniving noblemen side by side with him in Midland's court. His Hawks are involved in another skirmish on the front lines, where Caska and Guts are separated from the others. Wounded and trapped in enemy territory, they struggle to return to the Hawks before the marauding armies of Chuder track them down.

Refreshing characters in a dark hack and slash by hneline1 October 1, 2002 - 6:58 PM PDT

This series continues to impress me with its focus on character development, motivations and emotions. In many other violent anime that I've seen, the characters are cardboard stereotypes who are simply tools to show off gratuitous savagery. In this series, the characters are complex people who use violence to endure a savage world -- the focus is on the people, not the titillation of blood and death. In a way, this series reminds me of the dark grittiness of Cowboy Bebop, which also accepts violence as a part of its world and explores how people survive it. The episodes on this disk are pivotal because we learn something about Caska's past and her devotion to Griffith, and we learn something about Griffith's harsh path to achieve his ambitions. Beware of rape and child abuse themes. Also, I have to give credit to these episodes for bringing up a reality issue that I haven't seen addressed in any other hack and slash (anime or otherwise) -- if you're a woman warrior and suddenly your period starts just before battle, what can you do but suffer it? And of course the MEN aren't going to be sympathetic... ;-)
