Peter O'Toole has always been a great actor, but unlike some British actors in old age (Olivier comes to mind here), he has been choosing his roles carefully and so has had some very worthwhile roles to watch in recent years, among which is this one in which he is an aging actor, ably supported by Vanessa Redgrave, who is given too little screen time as his ex-wife. (Not sure if they ever did a picture in their younger years...that would have been a wonderful pairing. Would like to see them reunited in another film.) The reason why we see so little of Vanessa is because the film focuses on his
attraction to a young girl who is caring for an ailing friend, and the relationship which develops between the two of them. While the film is unflinching in its depiction of the pain of the infirmities that age can inflict upon us while not sparing us from desire, it was deeply saddening to see his desire channeled to such an unworthy character. For about 80% of the film she used him, failed to appreciate his stature in the world, treated him rather shabbily when he wanted to
caress her, and her reversal in wanting to take care of him came too late in the film for me to like her or care what happened to her. See this to savor the mature work of a master craftsman, who indeed will get a very large obituary complete with a beautiful picture of himself in his youth, just as his character did. |
