Jean Renoir was a fine filmmaker right from the start, but it was not until the thirties that he "became" Renoir. These two, La Fille de l'eau and Nana, are the work of a highly skilled director with a fine eye. One does have to be partial to Catherine Hesseling to appreciate them. She was a highly stylized performer who owed much to Mary Pickford, though much more erotic. Can't wait to see the second volume.
A peculiarity: some sources list a Marie Prevost in the cast. The American actress of that name was then at the height of her stardom, playing leads in some of Lubitsch's great silent comedies, as well as many other films. There is also no sign that she was at that time, or any other, ever in France. Was there another Marie Prevost? |
