Afro Samurai (voiced by Academy AwardŽ nominated Samuel L. Jackson) is an epic tale of a black samurai's hunt for Justice (voiced by Ron Perlman: Hellboy, Alien Resurrection ) who murdered his father. With music score by The RZA ( Kill Bill , Wu Tang Clan) Afro Samurai blends traditional Japanese culture, funky technology and hip hop to create a brutally fresh entertainment experience.

winner of best chris tucker performance not in a Rush Hour film goes to...Sam Jackson.
wow, who thought that was a good idea? Sam Jackson has created an all-time unlikeable, insufferable anime character (not afro, who says little, but his "side-kick"). and there is no japanese language track, so you're stuck.
the style is ripped from samurai champloo, with added anachronisms like robots and surveillance tech, which could have been interesting, if they weren't so NOT interesting. so it's derivative without any *special sauce*.
i get it...hip-hop culture is big in japan. i know nothing about hip-hop, but i had some vague idea that it was like jazz with an M.O. to be spontaneously creative and evolving (i.e., "fresh"). this is about as "fresh" as a week old bagel. the style is cliched and the language is ten years too late, and sooo frustratingly repetitive. i was quoting characters before words came out of their mouths.
i just....o.k., i have to stop. by the 5th episode, i was exhausted from frustration, and an imaginary little black cloud hung over my head.
to summarize: Samurai Champloo + Chris Tucker. if that appeals to you, go get it. |

Wishing the descriptions were a little more clear in this regard, disc one has the actual film, disc two only has extra stuff, which I found boring and didn't even bother to watch :(
Kind of like reading the last page of a book before you get there. |
