| I've seen a LOT of movies about rock music, and this is easily one of my favorites. There are a few reasons that make this tour film stand out for me. Seeing Lightning Bolt live is an engaging, turbulent and exciting experience and that really comes across in this film. There seems to be more than one camera to record the live performances (or else a surperb editing job) which makes watching the movie feel more like you are there. Other independant music films often show one staid view of the band without close-ups or even much cutting away. The cameras here wisely follow the reactions of the audience who are all thoroughly engaged. The songs are interspersed with off-stage scenes of the band, showing the diverse personalities of the duo and how they get along on the tour, which pulls the film along in some sort of momentum. No punk rock hedonists, the two actually have interesting artistic insights. The interviews with other people about Lightning Bolt are annoying, but that's the only real drawback. The DVD also includes some great experimental animation shorts as extras. |
