After the cancellation of "Twin Peaks," the commercial failures of FIRE WALK WITH ME and LOST HIGHWAY, Lynch fans questioned if Hollywood would permit him to make another film. The mainstream concessions of THE STRAIGHT STORY and combined artistic and commercial success of MULHOLLAND DRIVE demonstrated the mettle to reverse a downward career spin, and INLAND EMPIRE finds the director in top form. The smaller crew, budget, and editing flexibility of digital video appear to have been key to revitalizing the director's surreal narrative gifts. Here you'll find Lynch's favored motifs: the doppelganger (or in this case, ?quadruple-ganger?), the overlap of dream and waking states/film and reality, prostitutes, unforgettable characters, Hollywood, and monkeys. INLAND EMPIRE (the kingdom of the subconscious?) is too complex to comprehend in a single viewing, but don't hold its complexity and subtlety against it. INLAND EMPIRE is a film made to provoke thought and discussion. Today, much of the discussion will take place over the Internet, and I found the correspondence on IMDB particularly thoughtful.
