Renowned character actor Joe Mantegna makes his directorial debut with this film adaptation of one of David Mamet's first plays, boasting such onscreen talent as Peter Falk, Charles Durning, and Robert Forster. Based on Mamet's experiences of working on Great Lake freighters while a grad student, the film centers on Dale (Tony Mamet, David's brother), an Ivy League college kid working on the Seaway Queen on an internship one summer. Though his romantic vision of life on the sea is soon dashed, he befriends a half-dozen members of the world-weary crew and learns about the unexpectedly rich -- and occasionally tragic -- lives they lead. This film premiered at the 2000 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

| I am not a huge David Mamet fan; over time, his rat-tat-tat dialog (used less frequently here) becomes tiresome and not very revealing. This film, however, offers a kinder, gentler Mamet. The F-word is still ever-present--no big deal--but the men who man the ship of the title (over-the-hill, tired, but still questing) are into their "mentoring" stage, which they do as best they can. I believe it is Mamet's son who plays the lead, and he does a nice job as the sounding board for the characters of his co-actors--each of whom does a good job. The bouquet, however, goes to Robert Forster. Along with his role in DIAMOND MEN, here he proves again how splendid an actor he is. His two extended scenes with the young Mamet are quiet, strange, moving, sad and funny. Forster creates a wonderfully complete and complex character, and I wish Mamet would devote an entire play or film to exploring the character that Forster shows us. It's too bad this actor's films are so little seen; otherwise he'd be a shoo-in at awards time. |
